Donuts, one of the sweet pastry dishes that many of us enjoy for breakfast or a quick snack. Finding the best donut feels like a mission for many of us, either to bring us back to our childhood or just to have a really good donut. For me, Sandy Pony Donuts might be the diamond in the rough.

Sandy Pony Donut in Chincoteague

We were first introduced to Sandy Pony Donuts in 2019 when we visited Chincoteague Island during our Virginia Road Trip. Back then they were a food truck located in the lot across from our hotel, with an attractive and cute design. I mean just look at that food truck design!

When we visited Chincoteague again in 2021, we were delighted to see that they upgraded from a truck to a permanent location almost in the same spot. The truck itself is hidden from the main strip through the island.

Review of Sandy Pony Donuts

I grew up within 10 minutes of one of the top 10 donut shops in Pennsylvania, so for me, donuts need to reach a certain standard that many do not naturally meet.

Companies like Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts never fully satisfy the high standards I have for donuts, so when trying a new location, I try to keep an open mind.

Sandy Pony Donuts far exceeded my expectations on the first visit and our second one again in 2021.

The donuts are made to order and served hot and gooey.

The donuts while warm, were delicious with the right amount of toppings to satisfy the sweet tooth of any patron. Their donuts melt into your mouth and you became one with each bite.

The variety of donuts we ordered gave us enough options to go from uniquely fancy to the traditional style of donuts and not one of them missed the mark on excellence.

Recommendations for Ordering

We have ordered a half dozen donuts on both of our visits, but since our first visit, they have expanded to additional offerings with their Açaí bowls. While many individuals who were in line with us ordered at least one of these bowls, we did not.

As for ordering donuts, the chocolate glaze and cookies and cream are Melissa’s favorite, while the Porky Pony is Peters.

Final Thoughts

Personally, when we are looking to build travel plans, Sandy Pony Donuts always comes up in the conversation. Can we plan a stop in one of the other cities they have locations at? Usually, the answer is no, but they are definitely one of the donut shops that we both fell in love with.

From offering a themed experience of the donut flavors to the logo and boxes, this food stop gives you an all-around experience and should not be missed when visiting Chincoteague, Virginia.
