Is Spirit Airlines Saver$ Club Worth the Cost?

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

When you are booking a flight on Spirit Airlines you might be enticed by the Saver$ Club price offer. However, is it really worth the additional cost?

Priced in 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months savings options the Saver$ Club offers members numerous discounts.

Starting at $69.95 (as of 2022) for 12 months of benefits, members will have access to the following discounts:

  • Flights
  • Bags
  • Seats
  • Flight Flex
  • Security Shortcut
  • Boarding Shortcut

But what does this actually mean when comparing the cost?

Let’s take a flight from Philadelphia to Orlando (one of the most popular flights) as an example of what you can actually save.

For 1 Passenger:

Departure Flight Cost: $80 for the Saver$ Club per seat giving a savings of $8

Return Flight Cost: $61 for the Saver$ Club per seat giving a savings of $7

Departure flight cost details for Spirit Airlines with standard cost compared to savers club cost

This is a total savings of $15 ($8 + $7).

Total cost of Spirit Airlines for both standard cost and saver clubs.

To get the maximum savings on this flight, you would have to book each traveler individually because the more travelers in your booking the lower the savings become. Let’s look at the cost of booking a flight for 2 passengers for comparison.

For 2 Passengers:

Departure Flight Cost: $83 for the Saver$ Club per seat giving a savings of $5 per ticket

Departure flight cost details for Spirit Airlines with standard cost compared to savers club cost

Return Flight Cost: $64 or the Saver$ Club per seat giving a savings of $4 per ticket

Departure flight cost details for Spirit Airlines with standard cost compared to savers club cost

This is a total saving on two tickets of $18 ($9 x 2 tickets) not $30 like you would if you booked 2 individual tickets separately..

Total cost of Spirit Airlines for both standard cost and saver clubs.

If we are booking flights only and not worrying about baggage or seat selection, you would have to fly this example route 5 times to get your monies worth on the annual cost of the Saver$ Club membership. So if you have 5 individuals on your trip, you could earn this back in one trip, but book 5 separate times.

Upgrade & Save for Baggage and Seat Selection

If you move forward with the standard cost you will be offered to “Upgrade & Save” by choosing between three different bundles.

Example of Spirit Airlines upgrade bundles

In the “Book It” option you are allowed 1 personal item, while the “Just for you” and “Bundle it” upgrade offers you the option to pick your own seat and have additional baggage.

However, when we compare the cost for standard cost vs. Saver$ Club we see that the savings is only $1 for the “Just for You” option and $5 for the “Bundle It” option.

Example of Spirit Airlines upgrade bundles

Upon a closer look, you can see that these bundles do offer a few more amenities compared to the standard cost option. For example, “Just for you” provides you with early boarding when using a Saver$ club membership while the standard cost does not.

So for this example let’s select the “Just For You” option with a total savings of $1 when using the Saver$ Club. Remember the bundle will be attached to both your departure and return flight so the $52.50 will be charged twice giving you a total of $105 and a savings of $2.

This means for 1 individual we have a total savings of $17 and a flight cost of $315 (including the cost of a 12-month membership $69.95).

When looking at the overall savings, it will still take you 5 round trip flights in 12 months to make the cost of the Saver$ Club worth the investment.

Reasons to get the Saver$ Club

If you are a frequent flyer, honestly this is the only reason mathematically why you should spend $69.95 for savings.

As we show, it would take you 5 round-trip flights whether you are flying alone or in a group to get just the investment back in savings.

In Conclusion

It can feel like a great deal when hunting for flights and you see the option for the Saver$ Club cost, but unless you are traveling multiple times (5 or more to be exact) with Spirit Airlines, the Saver$ Club is not worth the cost of investment.

So if you are like Peter and myself who look for flight deals whenever possible, you have to consider the cost of baggage as well for Spirit airlines, even if you only want a carry-on.

While Spirit can be a great way to fly for the budget-friendly, it might cost you more in the final total.
